Bioinformatics in the Midwest Region of Brasil - BIOCOFO III
biofoco 3 Project - Description PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 25 May 2008 08:41

The main objective of the project is the software development for genomic analysis to be executed using cooperative and distributed environment at the Midlewest region of Brazil. This goal emerges with the worldwide effort to develop new methodologies to crack the secrets contained on the many genome sequences and its interactions. Bioinformatics has a key role in this context, creating computational tools capable of quickly analyzing large amounts of genome data with low cost compared with molecular biology wet lab. It is important to invest on the Bioinformatics research to provide the necessary support to the experimental molecular biology area and to boost the genomic discovery.

Therefore, in this project, we focus on the analysis of existing data instead of generating more genomic data. An accurate computational analysis could provide more information about the gene interaction or gene functionality at lower cost than compared with the investments on the wet laboratory. The final outcome of any biological research must come from the laboratory, but using the computational approach that might help the research to guide and prepare the experiments.

Three Bioinformatics areas will be focused on this project: Comparative genomics, prediction of non-coding RNAs and metabolic pathways. The developed software will be available on the distributed environment integrating research institutions.  The distributed environment will allow better use of computational resources by the management of simultaneous task execution in an efficient and fault tolerant way. Finally, biological sequence comparison algorithm will be implemented on hardware aiming to improve the processing time.
